Inspire the Spirit of Compassion in Your Child with the Beautiful Story of Paula Pelican
The woods were filled with
the calls of birds and animals.
“There is a fire! There is danger!”
Paula was frightened for her friends when suddenly
she had an idea.
There is only one thing Paula Pelican loves more than flying, and that’s helping others. Whether it’s a drowning sailor, a forest fire, or a hungry village, each day is full of excitement as Paula enlists the help of her sisters and her forest friends to prove that life can be one amazing adventure if you just have the courage and faith to go the extra mile.
Paula Pelican will teach, inspire, and entertain young readers, as author Donna Good Higbee writes about the importance of helping others in need.
This is a story of a pelican who starts out like any pelican learning to fly and dive and catch fish. She is told that this is what pelicans do their whole life long, but she is restless and unfulfilled. Then one day, she sees a chance to save some little ducklings from drowning in a terrible storm and rough water, and she has found her calling.
From then on, when she sees an opportunity to help out where help is desperately needed, she doesn’t hesitate to do what she can. Sometimes this means acting on her own but often it means taking a leadership role and asking other animals and birds to help her with a problem

Educational background: I graduated from Monticello High School in Monticello, Iowa. I have completed a two-year course of instruction at the world-famous Pasadena Playhouse College of Theatre Arts in Pasadena, California. Attended night classes at Pasadena City College, the University of California at Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara City College. I have a BA in Religious Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and graduated with “highest honors” in 1985. Also, I completed a year’s course of study and received my certificate as a certified clinical hypnotherapist.
Community/organizational involvement: I am a member of the local chapter of the American Red Cross, and have assisted with several disaster events, including Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. I’m a member of the network for animal rescue in Santa Barbara County, California.
Additional information: I was honored to be included in The Marquis Who’s Who in America, and also The Marquis Who’s Who of American Women. I have been included in their publications from 2006 - present.
On a personal note: I was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and came to California to become an actress. After graduating from the Pasadena Playhouse, I worked in the entertainment industry. Years later, I moved to Santa Barbara, California, and attended UCSB. After graduating, I went to work at UCSB in the Chancellor’s office and then transferred to the Marine Science Institute, where I fell in love with pelicans. Our offices were situated along the side of a large lagoon on one side and the ocean on the other, which allowed me to study the habits of the pelicans. What I didn’t learn from observation, I researched in the library.
In 2001, I went back to work in the entertainment industry, working on TV shows, films, and commercials. In 2011, the failing health of both my husband and my mother necessitated my staying in Santa Barbara and not continuing to work in Los Angeles.
Now I have time to devote myself to writing. My children’s book is the first of a number of writing projects I am planning.
